Creating Internal Adaptive Capability at Auckland Transport

With so many firms adopting agile ways of working, many are experiencing a lack of talent to support them. This case study shares how we created internal agile capability for Auckland Transport using a novel, rapid upskilling programme called 'Agile Jumpstart'.

Challenge

How might Auckland Transport find and onboard 24 skilled Agile Delivery Coaches in a market drastically shortage of talent?

Results

  1. 24 Agile Delivery Coaches created
  2. All coaches received accreditations from Scrum.org (Professional Scrum Master), and ICAgile (Agile Team Facilitation, Agile Coaching)
  3. A deep mentoring programme delivered to turn classroom learning into hands-on workplace skills
  4. Practicums to help attendees obtain real-world experience and build confidence
  5. Communities of Practice established to keep the cohort self-sustaining beyond Radically

Approach

When Auckland Transport returned to “the new normal” following the COVID crisis, Natasha Whiting, Executive General Manager of Culture and Transformation, saw an opportunity to leverage agile and adaptive ways of working. AT engaged Radically who bought thought leadership, pragmatism and deep expertise developed from working on some of New Zealand’s largest organisations and customised this to fit AT’s specific needs.

During the transformation programme, AT recognised the importance of creating their own Agile Delivery Coaches capability to sustain the change into the future. They considered a range of options, but quickly realised the lack of suitable talent in the market. AT turned to Radically for help.

Radically created Jumpstart – an immersive, 3-month programme to create qualified, talented Agile Delivery Coaches from within AT’s existing workforce.

Interest in the programme was strong, and not all applicants made it through. Those that did came away with hands-on skills and experience they could apply straight away – not to mention industry-recognised qualifications. In other words, a meaningful way to create sustainable change.

The end result for Auckland Transport has been profound. The business is no longer reliant on external support. The AT Delivery Coaches now have the ability to sustain AT’s investment in new ways of working into the future, for the benefit of all Aucklanders.

"Why look outside your organisation when you have people inside your organisation who are capable, smart and invested in making adaptive change?"
