Product Ownership with AI: From Backlog Management to Business Outcomes

Product Ownership with AI helps modern Product Owners move beyond backlog management and play a stronger role in shaping value, priority and delivery. Product Owners sit at one of the most important points in any organisation: where strategy, customer needs, business priorities and delivery capacity all meet.

When the role is clear and well supported, teams make better decisions, focus on higher-value work and deliver outcomes that matter. When it is unclear, the backlog becomes a dumping ground, priorities keep shifting, and teams stay busy without creating enough value.

This practical course helps Product Owners connect strategy to delivery, prioritise based on value, shape better roadmaps and use AI to improve product decisions, stakeholder conversations and delivery outcomes.

Overview

Product Ownership has changed. The best Product Owners do far more than manage a backlog or write user stories. They help the organisation make better choices about what to build, why it matters, who it serves, and how limited delivery capacity should be used.

This course builds the practical skills required to perform the Product Owner role well in modern organisations. You will learn

  • how to define value
  • understand customer and stakeholder needs
  • shape product goals
  • prioritise work
  • manage a backlog
  • support delivery teams
  • create roadmaps that connect strategy to execution.
  • use AI to run rapid experiments and validate customer needs

This course includes a practical, hands-on application of AI to the Product Owner role. You will learn how to use AI to draft and stress-test user stories, acceptance criteria and PRDs; where AI agents can genuinely help today, including backlog triage, research synthesis and stakeholder summaries; and where human judgement still matters. The course also explores rapid AI-assisted prototyping, helping Product Owners validate ideas, shorten feedback loops and reduce unnecessary development effort before teams commit to build.

This is a hands-on course. You will work with realistic examples, practice key techniques, and leave with tools you can apply immediately in your own organisation.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for people who are responsible for shaping, prioritising or managing work for delivery teams. It is particularly useful for:

  • Product Owners & Managers
  • Business Analysts
  • Delivery Leads/Agile Coaches
  • Project & Programme Managers
  • Digital, technology and transformation leaders
  • Subject matter experts moving into product or ownership roles
  • Leaders who want their teams to make better decisions about value and priority

You do not need to be an experienced Product Owner to attend. The course is suitable for people new to the role, people currently performing the role informally, and experienced practitioners who want to sharpen their approach and understand how AI can support modern Product Ownership.

Programme Overview

Product Ownership in modern organisations:  Understand what effective Product Ownership looks like today, including the role’s accountabilities, decision rights and connection to strategy, customer needs, stakeholder expectations and delivery focus. We also explore common failure patterns and how AI is changing the way Product Owners work.

Value, outcomes and prioritisation: Learn how to define value, clarify outcomes and make better prioritisation decisions. This includes comparing options, managing trade-offs, sequencing work and using AI to summarise research, generate hypotheses and prepare clearer prioritisation conversations.

Product goals, roadmaps and planning: Learn how to create product goals and roadmaps that provide direction without creating false certainty. We cover how to connect roadmaps to strategy, delivery capacity and changing conditions, while using AI to explore options and improve product communication.

AI Lens: Explore where AI can genuinely help Product Owners today, including backlog triage, research synthesis, stakeholder summaries, option generation and rapid prototyping. You will also learn where AI needs careful checking and where human judgement remains essential.

Backlog management and refinement: Learn how to manage the backlog as a decision-making tool, not a dumping ground. We cover backlog health, user stories, acceptance criteria, splitting work into valuable increments, and using AI to draft, challenge and refine backlog items and PRDs.

Stakeholders, teams and delivery: Build confidence managing stakeholder expectations, competing priorities and delivery team clarity. You will learn how to create better decision pathways, avoid becoming a bottleneck, improve feedback loops and use AI to prepare stakeholder updates, decision papers and product communication.

As a business owner who hasn't had a 'line of sight' into how the work can most effectively be strategically planned out and allocated, the Product Owner course has been invaluable. I've now got a broader perspective about how to challenge how we plan, prioritise and orient around 'the work'.

- Mark Reeves, Strategy Lead at Mercury NZ -

For someone that is new to the product management world, understanding the fundamentals, comparing how we work these fundamentals into action and learning new approaches to working has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of always moving forward.

- Martin Narvaez, Pre-Release Program Coordinator at MYOB -

The session was really good and helpful. Brendan did an amazing job teaching us the topics and examples around the Product Ownership in a more realistic way. We had a good interactive session with the other attendees and Brendan managed the conversations very well. Overall, it was really great and I had a lot of learnings through it. Would recommend it to other people.
